Well, we have said that biology is not like physics, working under a few fundamental principles.
However, we have tried to come up some important biological ideas with general implication across biology to help you in understanding the bigger picture.
It is difficult at best to reduce biology to a set of essential ideas. Any such list is likely to be incomplete, debatable, and may be subject to change as more is learned about life. Since legitimate subjects of study in biology include everything from submicroscopic biological molecules to vast landscapes incorporating many ecosystems, you can imagine the difficulty of reducing it all to a few ideas or simple statements. Despite these difficulties, here are my top 5 candidates:
Idea #1: Life Defined
Life requires cells, information storage, metabolism, and replication.
Idea #2: The Direction of Information Flow
Information in living systems flows from DNA -> RNA -> Protein. This statement is the so-called Central Dogma of Molecular Biology.
Idea #3: The Basic Unit of Life is the Cell
The kinds and concentrations of molecules and processes inside cells differ from those of the surrounding environment, thus distinguishing life from it's environment.
Idea #4: The Continuity of Life
The unity and diversity of life is due to the hereditary material and its transmission. Genes account for the fidelity exhibited from generation to generation and the relatedness of all life forms.
Idea #5: Life Evolves
The origin of life, it's diversity, and the adaptive nature of life are caused by evolutionary processes.
