Welcome to another issue of Math Tips Daily - the free eZine to offer tips and tricks for students to survive and excel in math.
Today's topic is about math memorization. Math is about problem solving, however, certain memorization would be required to start the math problem solving.
Often, math facts have to be recalled quickly and efficiently so that the problems given can be solved in a reasonable time. Multiplication tables are a good example of why something must be memorized. Even if one knows the concept of multiplication, knowing the answer to 8x7 off the top of your head is better than spending time figuring it out. To this end, it is best to memorize items that you will need such as definitions, formulas and rules.
* Understand First: When you memorize things that you don't quite understand, it's easy to recall them incorrectly, by dropping a minus sign, or mixing up the numerator and denominator, or in a hundred other ways. Be sure to understand the concept. Blind memorization will not take you very far.
* Multi-modal Memorization. Remember that definitions and formulas have to be stated and used very precisely. Write things out as you are memorizing them. Read it loud. Translate formulas into sentences. This speeds up the process while cementing the concept in your head.
* Relating: Another good way of remembering a new concept is to relate it to something that you already know. This will reduce the number of things you will need to remember.
That should do it for today. Tomorrow I will discuss the mnemonics for math.
Keep it up with your study. "See" you tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Seize the Day!
