[Physics Tips] How to score high on physics exams

Hi student,

Welcome to our Physics Daily - a newsletter on insider's tips and tricks in how to study physics effectively. Each day, you will receive an article and/or a visual tutorial on how to survive and excel in physics.

Today's topic is how to ace that physics exam coming toward your way? What exam prep tips can you use? What exam taking strategies can you use to score well on physics tests?

Physics is often regarded as one of those difficult courses that everybody has problems with. If you follow these tips, you can succeed in physics class.

To prepare for the exam use the following strategies. Be proactive and keep on top of the course material. Don't get behind and let things pile up.

Make a cheat sheet. This isn't for immoral purposes, but to organize your knowledge and study. It's a form of studying. Create an organizer of the material you should know. If there are gaps in your knowledge, look up the missing pieces and include them on the cheat sheet.

Be sure to know the task at hand. Be clear on exactly what topics are on the test. What chapters or sections are included, or excluded. Also find out what format the assessment will take: multiple choice, free response problems, essay, etc. The type of question will mold the strategy you should take in studying.

Many times there will be old tests on file. This is especially true for AP, MCAT, and other standardized national test. Of course the tests won't be the same, but if you use take these previous tests as if they were real, it will be like taking a practice exam before the real thing. Examining the correct answers if available can also show any problem area you may have. If no exam is available for review, make one yourself of questions that you think are likely to be on the real test.

Get help! Even if you think you're well prepared, attending a review session, or instructor office hours can help even more. A study group of classmates can also help areas you may be weak in. Even if you help a classmate in an area that you understand, the process of explaining or teaching a concept further enhances your recall of that idea.

Once you arrive at the exam, study time is over. Now you can use certain strategies to help get the best possible score.

Be sure of the logistics. Know the exam time/location and arrive early. Be sure to have any needed materials. This might include number 2 pencils, calculator, protractor, etc. If you are rushed at the last minute you will simply add to your stress level.

Once you receive the exam, write down any facts or items that you've been having trouble memorizing. Once they are down on paper, you can clear your mind to work on other tasks on the exam.

As you are taking the exam, budget your time wisely. You might want to estimate time checkpoints to reach. For example, if the exam is 50 questions, you must reach number 25 at the halfway point of the given time. Don't speed too much time on any one question or problem. If you finish early, then go back and rethink those tough ones.

Work all the questions or problems in order. Sometimes the test follows a logical order or progression of topics. Sometimes information in previous questions is used again.

If you have multiple choice questions, guess well. Eliminate ridiculous, or known incorrect answers and guess from the remaining choices.

If you have free response problems or questions, provide as much work and supporting evidence as possible. If it is a question with a text answer, provide lots of support and explanation for your answer. If it is a word problem, provide lots of detail and work in your answer. Show all steps, formulas, units, etc.

That should do it for today! Let's master physics the EASY way! "See" you tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Seize the Day!
