[Math Tips] Mnemonics for Math

student,

Welcome to another issue of Math Tips Daily - the free eZine to offer tips and tricks for students to survive and excel in math.

Today's topic is the mnemonic technique for math memorization.

One powerful way of memorizing facts, rules and definitions is by using a mnemonic device. A mnemonic device is a word or a phrase that will help jog your memory and help you remember certain facts, rules and formulas. They are particularly useful for rules, especially if the rule or fact is new and unfamiliar.

As you start a new topic, it is useful to create these little mnemonic tips and add them to your cheat sheet. This way they are readily available when you need to review the material.

Here are some fun examples that will give you an idea of what they are and how you can use and create them.

Example 1: Dividing One Fraction To Another: Kentucky Chicken Fried
K_eep the first fraction, C_hange the sign from divide to multiply, F_lip the last fraction.

Example 2: Area Of A Circle
Apple pie R round: A = π × r × r

Example 3: Function Definitions in Trigonometry
The Old Arab Carried A Heavy Sack Of Hay
Tan = Opp/Adj, Cos= Adj/Hyp, Sin= Opp/Hyp

Remember the mnemonic that you create for yourself does not have to make sense to anybody else. You have complete creative license with regards to it.

I think you got the drill. That should do it for today.

Keep it up with your study. "See" you tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Seize the Day!
